SPEAKING TEST

The meaning of the term lexis is a stock of words in a language. It is also called lexical resource which refers to the range of vocabulary that you should use while speaking in English. As the IELTS is primarily an English proficiency test, you need to prove that you have the ability to use a word in the right context. That is why this component lexical resource is very essential.

In the speaking test also, you need to speak fluently and display your ability to use the language without hesitation. The topic is a very common one. But, you need to speak about it eloquently and demonstrate your language skill. A person with poor communication skills, who cannot extend the sentence and talk will definitely face a problem in the main test. In order to avoid that, you should pay close attention to learning words. Not just learning the words, but you should know when to use it(in the appropriate time) and how to use the words.

• Less Common vocabulary or expressions

There is no list of these items to use. Look into some idiomatic expressions, but not just the usual ones, and be very clear the context in which these should be used.

• Paraphrasing, that is to describe something even if you are not sure of the exact language or words to use. When you practice your speaking, do not give up if you can not find the right word, keep trying to explain what you mean - thats a valuable skill. Use these phrases: Its like a, Its something you use to, Its a way of, Its a kind of.


• Synonyms are words or expressions which have a similar meaning - these are often important in all modules of the IELTS test, example:

I would like to work for a large company / giant firm when I gain experience. He is an actor who is famous worldwide / globally / internationally / universally. Our goal / target / objectives to reduce debts to a minimum. The results / findings / outcomes of many investigations make the same conclusion. The interpretations / explanations / analysis of experts in this area differ.
